Our 2024 | College of Mathematical Medicine: Grateful for the Past, Hopeful for the Future

2024-12-31

How swiftly time passes,

2024 is drawing to a close.

This year

We’ve shared countless unforgettable moments—

Laughter, determination, and heartfelt emotion.

Each memory

Is woven with heartfelt care and unwavering support

That each of you has given to the College of Mathematical Medicine.

It is this boundless connection

That fuels our relentless drive,

Pushing us forward with unwavering courage.

Time, in its own way,

Marks each step, each gesture, each achievement,

Leaving us with hearts full of gratitude.

As we look back,

We honor the challenges,

And the rewards,

Of this unforgettable year—2024

With Grateful Hearts, We Strive Ahead

This year, faculty and students across the college have focused on studying and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. We’ve thoroughly engaged with the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress, previous plenary sessions, and the seventh University Party Congress. We’ve also actively participated in party discipline education, undergone inspections by the university Party Committee, and worked to strengthen our ideals and beliefs, further solidifying our momentum for growth and development.

The support and guidance from leaders and experts at all levels have been a key driving force behind the college's innovative development.

On the occasion of the college’s third anniversary, the feature article Exploring New Paths and Cultivating New Talents in the Intersection of Mathematical Medicine gained significant attention and was widely shared by mainstream media outlets, including Xuexi Qiangguo, Zhejiang Daily, Phoenix News, and Tencent.

Diligence and Striving, Honed by Practice

We’ve actively developed a cross-disciplinary approach to talent training, using an undergraduate academic innovation mentor system that blends course learning, research training, academic competitions, and hands-on practice.

Our teaching efforts have been comprehensive, with a focus on curriculum design, textbook development, and educational reforms. We’ve also built a curriculum case database dedicated to moral and value education to ensure effective classroom teaching.

To further enrich academic life, we’ve organized frontier forums, lecture series, short-term courses, and idea-exchange discussions. These activities have broadened the academic perspectives of both faculty and students and sparked innovative thinking.

Pioneering Spirit, Embracing the Challenge

The college has introduced a new undergraduate program in Intelligent Medical Engineering, which has been well-received by its first cohort of students.

A master's degree program in Biomedical Engineering has also been launched, with enrollment now open. The college has also collaborated with the College of Life Sciences and the College of Chemistry and Materials Science to introduce a “Biology and Medicine master's program, which was successfully approved.

To further strengthen its academic profile, several world-renowned scientists have been appointed as distinguished professors, bringing significant energy to the college’s innovative development.

The college has also signed cooperation agreements with prestigious universities, enterprises, and research institutions, including the University of Genoa, the University of Cagliari in Italy, and Grand Pharmaceutical Group, further expanding its global network and collaborative potential.

Innovation-Driven, Striving for Excellence

We hosted the 2024 Academic Annual Conference of the Mathematical Imaging Alliance, bringing together over 300 experts and scholars who engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges. This event greatly contributed to the advancement of the discipline and enhanced the college’s influence.

Additionally, we organized the 2024 Conference on Mathematical Medicine and Its Clinical Applications and the Seminar on Mathematical Problems in Image Processing, which gathered experts from universities, research institutions, and hospitals. These events fostered discussions on advancing the integration of science, engineering, and medicine, while promoting collaborative innovation across industry, academia, and research.

The innovative contributions of the college’s founding dean, Professor Kong Dexing, garnered attention from Scientific Chinese and other state media outlets.

Faculty and students made remarkable strides in innovation this year. Faculty members participated in and won the first prize at the Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award, two second prizes from the China Association of Inventions, and one second prize from the China Technology Market Association. Over 30 papers were published in internationally renowned academic journals like IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.

Students also achieved outstanding results, winning four national-level innovation and entrepreneurship training projects, along with one provincial-level project and one SEED project. They also earned two first prizes in national A+ level discipline competitions and 14 awards in provincial A+ and A-level discipline competitions.

In Exchange and Collaboration, We Act in Solidarity

Faculty and students actively participated in high-level academic conferences and events, including the “WLA Life Science Forum,” where they engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges with peers and experts.

The college also took an active role in co-organizing major events such as the 2024 China Medical Artificial Intelligence Conference and the 5th Medical Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Development Conference.

Renowned experts from leading universities, both domestic and international, as well as medical professionals, visited the college for academic exchanges and collaborative research initiatives.

United by Youth, Vitality in Every Step

In September, the college welcomed 149 new undergraduate students, 27 new master’s students, and 1new doctoral students.

Faculty, students, and medical experts from affiliated and teaching hospitals traveled to the mountainous regions of Wuyi and Jingning, offering free medical check-ups and consultations to local villagers.

We are cultivating a unique culture of mentorship, teaching, and learning—one that emphasizes faculty-student harmony. In this environment, faculty and students engage in open dialogue, interact freely, and grow together.

Looking back at 2024,

We walked with steady steps,

Striving forward,

Forging resilience through every challenge,

Emerging stronger,

Ready to blaze new trails.

As we gaze towards 2025,

Our hearts remain steadfast,

Holding close the promises made,

With renewed vigor,

We chase the light ahead,

Writing even more brilliant chapters.
