On the afternoon of September 15, the Freshmen Welcoming Ceremony 2022 of the College of Mathematical Medicine was held near Zhengyang Lake. The ceremony joined 31 undergraduates, 16 master’s students and Ph.D. students, and 1 postdoc fellow who gathered here to start a new chapter in their lives. The ceremony was attended by Dean Kong Dexing, Vice Dean Wen Jianming, Distinguished Professor Yuan Jing, Honorary Professor Chen Feng, Shuanglong Distinguished Professor Huang Shoujun, Associate Professor Li Gang (Head of Artificial Intelligence Department), Class supervisor Dr. Wang Xiaolin, etc. The ceremony was chaired by Party Secretary Mao Xilong.
Dean’s Welcome Address
Dean Kong Dexing, extended his heartfelt greetings and sincere welcome to the freshmen of 2022 on behalf of the College of Mathematical Medicine. He also thanked the parents and teachers who followed the ceremony live and provided valued support. Dean Kong motivated students to excel by emphasizing “character building”, “academic inquiry” and “social learning”.
Appointment Ceremony
Prof. Chen Feng received a letter appointing him Honorary Professor from Dean Kong Dexing. Prof. Chen completed his postdoctoral research at KU Leuven. Previously, Prof. Chen served as Director and Chief Physician of the Department of Radiology at the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU). With Prof. Chen joining the college, the faculty development and interdisciplinary studies of the College will be significantly enhanced.
Representative Speeches
Dr. Ge Xinyang spoke on behalf of fellow teachers and shared his thoughts on interdisciplinary studies based on his own research and work experience. He also provided students with useful study and life guidance.
Tang Lixian, the freshmen representative of the Class of 2022, presented and shared her motivation to study medicine as well as her dedication to AI and medicine studies.
Dong Cheng spoke on behalf of postgraduates of the Class of 2022. He revisited his past ZJNU days and expressed his connection and gratitude to ZJNU. He also emphasized his dedication to mathematical medical research.
Memory·Remembrance
At the welcoming ceremony, Dean Kong presented the admission certificates to the freshmen of 2022 one by one, to celebrate the precious and landmark moment of the College welcoming its first cohort of students.
First Class
After the welcoming ceremony, Dean Kong offered the freshman the first class, “When Math Meets Medicine”, in which he discussed big data, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine. Dean Kong also shared with students the latest theories, approaches, concepts, innovations, and clinical application models that emerged from the intersection of mathematics and medicine.
The ceremony was also attended by staff from Administrative Office, Student Administration Office, Academic Affairs Office, and offices at Hangzhou Campus. Student parents watched the ceremony live.
